Traditionally Insurance Brokers have fallen into two distinct categories.

The first of these are your large commercial insurance brokers, and whilst they certainly have the buying power to get good deals, they have a number of disadvantages from a client perspective. The biggest of these is that they are generally allied to a narrow panel of insurers (less choice for the customer), and try to keep their accounts with these insurers, mainly as they get larger commissions and bonuses with them.

There are a number of other issues with your large commercial brokers, such as a high turnover of staff, high operating costs, and disjointed IT systems. All these add up to higher costs for their clients, and lower levels of service.

The second type of broker, is your small local independent broker. With these you generally get a much higher level of service, and a friendly face as they don’t suffer from high staff turnover. But they do have their downsides, such as; antiquated IT systems with old software (so it can take an age to get you a quote), lack of buying power (so the insurers may simply not give them the lowest rates). The lack of buying power also means clients rarely get above standard insurers policy wordings.
